Chatbot in Latvian: does it really understand the language?

A chatbot can speak good Latvian, but Latvian on a platform's language list does not mean the bot gets cases, place names and the polite form right. The Tidio Help Center lists 48 languages, Latvian among them, while the Tidio website says 12. So before you pay, run six tests on the bot with your own content.

Can a chatbot speak Latvian, and what does that mean?

Yes, at least some of the platforms we checked officially list Latvian, but the real question is how well they handle it on your website. A buyer needs two things: the bot understands a question asked in Latvian, also with typos and without diacritics, and it answers in correct, natural Latvian.

A platform's language list only answers the first question, and not always precisely. If Latvian is on the list, the vendor supports it, but that does not mean anyone has tested it with your price list, your service names and your customers' questions.

How AI handles Latvian in general, in text, speech and voice, is covered in a separate article: does AI speak Latvian. This page is only about a chatbot that answers customers on your website.

Which chatbot platforms officially support Latvian?

Two of the three chatbot platforms we checked have Latvian on their official language list; the third does not mention languages on its pricing page at all. We opened all pages on 25 October 2026. The table is not a ranking: it only shows what the vendors themselves claim.

What the official pages of chatbot platforms say about Latvian, checked 25 October 2026
Platform and pageWhat the official page saysLatvianWhat to check yourself
Intercom Fin, Help Center65 entries on the language list, including regional variants such as English (UK), French (Canada) and German (Austria), so the number of separate languages is lowerOn the listWhether you have content in Latvian or real-time translation turned on

Why does one company give two different language counts?

We do not know, and that is the main takeaway. The Tidio Help Center lists 48 languages for Lyro, Latvian among them, but the Tidio page about AI assistants says 12 languages without naming them. The pages do not show which one is newer or how the numbers should be read.

In practice, a language list is a starting point, not proof. Before you sign, check that Latvian can be selected in your own account and settings, then run the tests described below.

Why is Latvian harder for a chatbot than English?

In Latvian the same word changes its ending by case, number and gender. In English, "in Riga", "from Riga" and "to Riga" differ only by the preposition; in Latvian they are "Rīgā", "no Rīgas" and "uz Rīgu". If the bot gets the ending wrong, the content can be right but the sentence sounds machine-translated, and a customer notices at once.

  • Cases and endings. Place names, surnames and product names change form in a sentence: "Daugavpils filiālē", "pie Jāņa Bērziņa".
  • Long vowels and soft consonants. Many customers type without diacritics, for example "cik maksa piegade", and the bot still has to understand the question.
  • Polite form. A business usually needs the formal "jūs", but a bot may switch to the informal "tu" or mix both in one answer.
  • Word order and calques. A sentence can be grammatically correct and still sound translated from English.
  • Numbers and currency. Latvian uses a decimal comma and "%" with a space, for example "12,50 €" and "25 %", not "12.50 EUR" or "25%".

What does research say about AI and Latvian?

The study we found mostly measures how well a model understands questions in Latvian, not how naturally it writes an answer to a customer. In LAG-MMLU (NoDaLiDa/Baltic-HLT 2025, published in March 2025), the authors compared six language models on 112 questions from the MMLU test, translated into Latvian and checked by people.

OpenAI's o1-preview model had the highest results in all languages. The authors also found that human corrections to the Latvian machine translation improved the evaluation only slightly and not significantly. This is about understanding questions. Such a test does not check whether the bot uses the right ending and polite form in its answer, or whether it quotes your price, so you have to check that yourself.

How to test a chatbot in Latvian before you buy: six tests

Give the bot your own materials in Latvian and ask the questions your customers really ask. We designed these tests ourselves: this is our method, not a research result. Repeat each test at least twice, because AI can answer differently each time.

Six tests for a chatbot in Latvian: what to ask and when to worry
TestWhat to askWhat the answer should showWarning sign
1. Casual and formal style"cik jums maksā piegāde?" and "Lūdzu, norādiet piegādes izmaksas"The same price both times and the polite "jūs" formThe answers differ or the bot switches to "tu"
2. Place names in cases"Vai jums ir filiāle Daugavpilī?", "Vai pasūtījumu var saņemt Jelgavā?"The correct form in the answer: "Daugavpilī", "Jelgavā"The base form in the middle of a sentence, for example "pieejams Jelgava"
3. Numbers and currencyA question about a price, a deadline or a percentageThe same number as in your price list, with a decimal comma, "€" and "%" with a spaceA different number than in your materials, or the English format "12.50 EUR"
4. A question your materials do not answerSomething that is not on your pages, for example next year's pricesThe bot says it does not know and offers to contact a personThe bot makes up a price, a deadline or a condition
5. Text without diacritics"vai varu atgriezt preci pec 14 dienam"The bot understands the question and answers with diacriticsThe bot does not understand, or answers without diacritics
6. Switching language mid-conversationStart in English or Russian, then switch to LatvianThe bot follows your language or says clearly which language it continues inThe bot stays in the previous language or mixes two languages in one answer

Why does the language switch test matter?

Because switching language in a conversation is not a given, and some customers start with "hello". Intercom says Fin detects the language once per conversation and all answers follow it. If your customers start in English and continue in Latvian, you need to see that in a test, not after launch.

A failed test does not always mean the platform is wrong for you. Sometimes better Latvian content or different settings help. But you need to know before you sign, not after a customer has already received a wrong answer.

What content does a bot need to answer well in Latvian?

It needs your own text in Latvian: pages, a price list and frequent questions with answers. Intercom describes that Fin first looks for an answer in content in the language of the question. If there is no Latvian content and real-time translation is turned on, Fin takes content in the default language and translates the answer. Tidio says Lyro processes sources in their original language, without translating them into English first.

  • a price list with specific numbers;
  • frequent customer questions with answers in your own words;
  • service and product names the way customers write them;
  • clear rules on delivery, returns and opening hours;
  • a contact the bot hands the conversation to when it has no answer.

Our conclusion, not a platform claim: if the bot answers in Latvian from English text, there is one more translation between your text and the customer. It can introduce errors in names, endings and nuances. The more clearly the question and the answer are written on your page in Latvian, the less the bot has to guess. Before testing, prepare:

Does Latvian language law apply to a website chatbot?

Article 21 of the State Language Law says that information in signs, notices and other messages must be provided in the state language if it concerns legitimate public interests and is meant to inform the public. Article 2 of the law lists consumer protection among those legitimate public interests. If a foreign language is used alongside, the Latvian text must have the main place.

We found no separate guidance on chatbots, so we do not know how this rule applies to a chat window on a website. The second requirement is Article 50 of the AI Act: a person must know that a bot is answering, and this applies from 2 August 2026. More: do you have to say a bot is answering.

This is not legal advice.

How much does a chatbot in Latvian cost?

We quote the price of our chatbot after a conversation, because it depends on scope. We give an exact amount after looking at your website. VAT is added to our prices. The price depends on:

  • how many questions and topics the bot needs to cover;
  • whether the bot reads only your website or also price lists, documents and internal materials;
  • which channels the bot works in: only on the website or also, for example, in a messaging app;
  • whether and how the bot hands the conversation over to a person;
  • what the monthly fee covers: conversation volume, token costs and technical maintenance.

How do we check Latvian in our own chatbots?

Our chatbot answers only from your materials: pages, price lists, FAQs and documents you hand over or that we collect from your public website. Before launch, and by sampling after it, a Latvian-speaking person reviews the answers in Latvian. Where your materials have no answer, the bot says so and hands the conversation, with its full history, to a person.

The chatbot account and integrations are registered in your company's name, there is no annual contract, and you can end the work with 30 days' notice. More: website chatbot.

Frequently asked questions

Can a chatbot speak Latvian?

Yes, but not all equally well. Intercom Fin and Tidio Lyro list Latvian on their official language lists; the Chatbase pricing page does not mention languages (25 October 2026). Being on the list does not mean the bot uses cases correctly, so test it with your own content before you buy.

Which chatbot handles Latvian better?

We found no independent comparison of chatbot platforms in Latvian, so we do not give a ranking. The right one for you is the one that passes the tests with your content: correct cases, correct numbers and an honest "I don't know" when your materials have no answer.

Does Tidio Lyro support Latvian?

The Tidio Help Center lists Latvian among the 48 Lyro languages (page updated 30 September 2026, viewed 25 October 2026). The Tidio website page about AI assistants says Lyro answers in 12 languages without naming them. Check in the Lyro settings whether Latvian is allowed, or ask Tidio.

Does Intercom Fin support Latvian?

Yes, the Intercom Help Center has Latvian on the Fin language list (page dated 24 August 2026, viewed 25 October 2026). Fin first looks for an answer in Latvian content. If there is none, it can translate from the default language when real-time translation is turned on.

Can a ChatGPT-based website chatbot speak Latvian?

A chatbot built on a large language model can understand and answer in Latvian, but quality depends on the model, the settings and your content. In the LAG-MMLU study, OpenAI's o1-preview had the highest results, but the study measured understanding of questions, not the language of answers to customers.

Why does a chatbot get Latvian cases wrong?

Because in Latvian words change their ending by case, number and gender, and place names, surnames and product names change form in a sentence. If the bot has little Latvian text on your topic or answers from a translation, it is more likely to get endings wrong.

Does a chatbot in Latvia have to be in Latvian by law?

Article 21 of the State Language Law requires the state language for information meant to inform the public that concerns legitimate public interests, consumer protection among them. We found no separate guidance on chatbots. This is not legal advice.

Can a bot answer in Latvian if my website is in English?

Yes, if the platform translates. Intercom Fin with real-time translation turned on takes content in the default language and translates the answer. Our advice: give the bot content in Latvian, because every translation is one more place where names and endings can go wrong.

How do I know a chatbot is not making things up in Latvian?

Ask a question your materials do not answer. A good bot says it does not know and hands the conversation to a person. If it makes up a price or a deadline in a test, it will most likely do the same with customers. Then compare the numbers in its answers with your price list.
